Recently traded for a fal. I was told it was a pre-ban. How do I tell if it is inch or metric? Where can I get a ton of info on them? How can I find out a little more about the receiver on it? Were and when it was made?
The receiver has only the markings on the right side. Its says CAI sporter next line has one letter four numbers L1A1-308-cal lower receiver (guess thats what is called.
I houses the trigger assembely) Has some numbers and letters. If more info helps Ill get it for you.

How do I tell if it is inch or metric?Century built their FAL sporters both ways, Inch and Metric. The easiest way to tell is to look at the front wall of the mag well in the upper receiver. The recess for the tab on the front of the magazine is located there.
If the recess is triangular in shape, it's Metric. If the recess is rectangular in shape, it's Inch. The front of Inch mags have a small L-shaped tab welded on, and this tab presents a rectangular projection to the inside front wall of the mag well, which fits into the corresponding recess. Metric FAL mags have a triangular-shaped outward 'dimple' at the top of the front wall where the mag body sheetmetal was punched outward. NOTE: Inch receivers generally will accept Metric magazines, but not vice-versa.
Even if a Metric mag fits in an Inch magwell, the weapon may or may not function properly; some do, some don't, because the Metric mags sometimes sit lower in the magwell and don't present the cartridge to the bolt properly. Bolt ride-overs are the result. Nearly every Century FAL 'sporter' was postban, meaning made between 1994 and 2004. Century recently made available more FAL clones in standard 'non-ban' configuration.
Century used receivers made by a number of sources including Imbel in Brazil (some are marked Imbel, some not), SBL as noted above, a CNC machine shop in Canada, and another in the US. It will be difficult to tell when and by whom. Lowers are usually surplus, and can be from England or Australia. There will be a string of numbers and letters on a surplus lower, and these are the clue as to what surplus parts kit may have been used for the build.

Most were sold without a muzzle device, the front end of the barrell having an inch or so lopped off along with the threads and then recrowned. You most likely have a receiver (the upper, which is the legally tracked part) wearing inch pattern parts (barrell, furniture, internals, sights) from an inch pattern gun (such as fielded by Australia, Britain, Canada).
Said receiver may have been produced domestically or imported from Brazil or Argentina. Its magwell was cut for either inch or metric pattern mags.
Metric mags have a 'beak' for attachment to the receiver; Inch mags have a substantial lug. If your parts are British there will be a profusion of part numbers, such as on the side of the gas block.
